History

Year 9

History is taught to all students in year nine.  Students experience a curriculum focussed on the significant events, individuals and changes in Britain and her Empire from 1800 and on the changing nature of warfare 1914 – present day.  Students follow enquiries focussed on key historical questions and debates and learn through studying a variety of different resources, making full use of ICT, video and audio material.

Year 10 & 11

Students who opt for History at GCSE will follow one of two courses on offer.  The AQA Modern World B course offers students an opportunity to study Modern World History. The second course, OCR History Pilot, offers students the chance to carry out traditional academic research into 4 different periods of History and to study some more vocational aspects of history and heritage tourism.  History in years 10 and 11 is taught in 3 lessons.  Both courses are assessed through a combination of written examination and course work.

Year 12 & 13

History is a popular course for students opting to continue their studies in the Sixth Form.  AS and A2 History is offered to students who have achieved a B or above in their GCSE History.  The History A level provides students with both depth and breadth of study, incorporating aspects of modern and 17th century History.  Students are expected to demonstrate a keen interest in the subject and successful students are those who read extensively around their studies.
